Last night I began reading a book by David Ramsey the Money Makeover and Financial Peace University guy. At the beginning of the book in the introduction, before I could even get into the book I read the following words, “Years ago God called me to…”
Those words came alive in my spirit and I had to put the book down for a moment to ponder on just what those few words meant coming from this man who is known for what he does.
The first thing I realized is that he did not start off in his calling where he is today.
He started as a guy who found himself in debt and then learned how to get of debt. This was the catalyst he needed to answer the call to teach others what he learned that worked.
He self-published his first book Financial Peace and began selling it out of his car. He started sharing his message on a local radio call-in show called The Money Game.
Today, the guy who wrote the book I started reading last night is a best-selling author of six books on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Publishers Weekly lists. He employs more than 550 people and had has helped countless people reach their financial goals through a variety of products and services. His radio show is now nationally syndicated as The Dave Ramsey Show.
How? He stuck with what God called him to do. His passion fueled his purpose. He believed in what he was called to do.
Some people go after their calling like it’s a sprint.
They expect things to happen overnight. They try to get people to believe and buy into things they’re not sure about themselves. If one thing doesn’t work they try another. And that’s fine if that’s what you’re called to do. But when God calls you to do something most times it won’t happen overnight.
You have to commit to doing the same thing for the long run, consistently. Like a marathon, practice prepares you for the longevity of the big race.
You have to be in it not just for yourself but for the importance of the work you were called to do, the people you are called to reach whether many or few.
In this day and age of social media, it’s easy for people to want to give up when they think they’re not growing in their calling, whatever that may be, at the same speed others seem to be.
Looking at what other people are doing can get you off track from accomplishing your goals and finishing your race.
It can make you think that starting something new is the best thing to do when all you really need to be is remember why God called you to do the work and draw inspiration from your own calling!
Yes, I got all that out of those few words.
It reminded me of when God first called me and gave me a mission. The way I go about doing the work changes but my purpose and mission remain the same. I was reminded of just how important it is to stick too what God called me to do, no matter what. And, when I need inspiration I return to what He told me. One day, I hope to be able to look back and write those same kinds of words from a place of good godly success.
But that, Beloved, takes obedience and faith. I hope I’ve inspired both in you today.
