In the Story of Martha and Mary the Bible reads:
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus is the good portion:
Life has a way of distraction us form the One thing that is most important, Jesus our portion. Mary choose to rebel against the busyness of life to sit at Jesus feet and hear His word. It was a choice she had to make for herself to go against what was expected of her and doing what was best for her. Martha on the other hand was distracted with serving others and did not realize how it important this one thing was to her own life and well-being especially as one who serves others.
I wonder ever she heeded Jesus and changed her way of doing things. I’m not sure, the Bible doesn’t say but you and I can heed the words of this story and choose for ourselves the good portion – Jesus, that cannot me taken away.
Choosing Jesus:
Psalm 16:5 and 6 says, “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” In life, ministry and work, yes, in all things it’s important that we choose the path God has for us because that’s how we come into our portion.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and November is the month I reflect on what’s important to me and the things I’m thankful for. This is my month to renew my relationship with the Lord, to choose Jesus each day in a new and special way.
I’m taking a sabbatical (extended Sabbath) for the month of November from social media, HGTV (my favorite television station) and other things that distract me to consecrate myself onto the Lord.
