David said of the Lord’s beauty,
One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple. Psalm 27:4
The God kind of beauty David was referring to is His splendor, glory, grace, and pleasantness.
God’s beauty shapes our identities as we allow the incorruptible beauty sown in our hearts when we are born-again, spoken of in 1 Peter 3:3 and 4 to flourish into a reflection of His splendor, glory, and grace in our lives. This is more than outward appearances.
Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. 1 Peter 3:3-4
This incorruptible beauty is the humility, meekness, undisturbedness and what the Greek definition of the word quiet defines as, “staying seated” that only God’s beauty flourishing in you can produce. Staying seated brings to mind the verse in Ephesians that says were seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (1:20). This is the kind of beauty the trumps bitterness, unforgiveness, and all the plots and plans of the wicked one.
It’s the kind of beauty that demonstrates faith in God and whispers back to you, “Hey girl, trusting God looks good on you! Confidence suits you!”
It’s the kind of beauty that makes YOU want to take off the garments of the past and put on the beautiful garments of bravery, honor, and majesty spoken of in Isaiah 52:1 and 2,
Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean shall no longer come to you. Shake yourself from the dust, arise; Sit down, O Jerusalem! Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck, O captive daughter of Zion!
God’s beauty not only shapes our identity but it shapes our faith. When we cultivate incorruptible beauty and put on the right garments God can make everything, even the things that are seemingly ugly and unrepairable beautiful in time, (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
It’s not easy at first but if you stick with God and allow Him to chisel off the old corruptible you and shape your identity, Beloved, you will become beautiful not only on the outside but on the inside too, so much so that you will be a walking, talking reflection of the beauty of the Lord!
