A lifestyle is defined as the habits, attitudes, and standards, that together constitute the way in which an individual, group, or culture live.
While attitudes and standards play a significant role in a person’s lifestyle, this post will focus on habits.
A habit is defined as a settled or regular tendency or practice.
Habits can be good or bad.
Habits are formed by the things you choose to give your time and attention to.
Your habits form your routine. Your routine forms your lifestyle.
In the story of Martha and Mary, the two sisters that were friends with Jesus the Bible says,
Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]! But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are distracted and troubled about many things; there is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.
(Luke 10:38-42 AMPC)
The good portion is the part of life that is beneficial and advantageous for you.
To be distracted is to have care, worry, or anxiousness.
It comes from a root word that means to part, to share, to disunite, distribute, divide, or give in part.
When you are distracted, your attention is constantly being shared so that you only give yourself in part to the things you are called to do. Therefore, it’s hard to focus on one or a few things that will truly benefit you.
To create a lifestyle that prioritizes the things that matter:
Eliminate the things that distract you.
Identify the things that are good and beneficial for you in this season of life and make them your priorities.
Then reorder your life around those things until they become the habits that form your daily routine.
We begin this Sunday, October 11th.
