The Lord redeems us because of His everlasting love for us. He draws us into a relationship with Him by His loving-kindness. This is all part of His plan for us to spend eternity with Him.
In the book of Ruth, He drew Ruth into a deeper relationship with Himself by His loving kindness, and because of His everlasting love for her He led Boaz to redeem her.
After they were married Ruth had a son. Then the women of the village came to Naomi and said of the child, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age” (Ruth 4:14–15).
Through this son the Lord ensured His everlasting love was carried forward beyond her generation. The child’s name was Obed, which means renowned or famous and well-known. Obed was the grandfather of King David, with whom the Lord made an everlasting covenant. It is the same covenant the Lord desires to make with all His children, established on His Son, Jesus Christ, the ultimate gift of love.
Isaiah wrote of this covenant: “Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David,” (Isaiah 55:2–3).
God swore to David, that David would always have one of his sons seated on the throne of Israel (see Isaiah 9:7 and Luke 1:32). The Lord kept His word to David and showed His eternal love to Ruth throughout all the generations until Jesus Christ the Messiah, the Eternal King who is the “son of David,” sat on His heavenly throne once and for all (Matthew 1:1). He made sure Obed’s name was renowned. Every time Jesus’ genealogy is read, Obed’s name is included as the son of Boaz and Ruth as a sign of His unending love for Ruth.
No matter what the children of Israel have done through the years, no matter how far they have strayed, the Lord always remembers His covenant with the great, great-grandson of Ruth. His everlasting love for them continues to remain faithful and true.
Just like He kept His everlasting covenant of love with Ruth through her grandson David, God is committed to His covenant of everlasting love with you. He wants to create a legacy of love with you so that your children and your children’s children can benefit from God’s covenant with you throughout eternity.
Beloved, it’s up to you to lay hold of God’s love and enter into His covenant so He can establish you and your generations for all eternity. Do you believe that God’s love for you is everlasting? How are you walking in this truth and building your future on His word for generations to come?
