You have a right to God’s quietness in your soul and your dwelling place, the kind that comes from peace and is evidenced by a calmness and a stillness that only comes from confidence in God.
When you don’t have peace you cannot enter into God’s rest and therefore will not experience quietness in your soul, your home, your relationships our anyone else that you connect with. I know because there was a time when I had no peace which led to no rest in my spirit which led to an unquiet soul which effected every part of my life and relationships.
The Evidence of Quietness
The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. Isaiah 32:17
You can tell when a person has peace because their words are few, they dwell at ease, prefer others above themselves and confidence in God emanates from them.
The Absence of Quietness
The absence of quietness is revealed by the presence of much talking, strife, arguing and manipulation. You can tell when a person has no peace because they usually aren’t quiet or settled in their spirit about anything. They are double-minded. However, God’s command to us is to be still and know that He is God (see Psalm 46:10). Jesus reminded us that we cannot change one thing with worry and toil (see Matthew 6:27).
Returning to Quietness
Isaiah 30:15, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength. But you were unwilling.”
Often times in the busyness and sorrows of life our souls become disquieted within us because of the clamor of the day’s unfinished business, the replays of yesterday’s regrets and the rehearsal of tomorrow’s worries and tasks.
Until we learn how to trust God we naturally try to work things out for ourselves. We muse over how to get “it” done, how to make “it” work, how to get our way until the musing becomes actions that most often fail and leave us with more anxious thoughts and more unrest.
If you are lacking quietness the solution is found in Psalm 131.
My heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me quieted. Hope in the Lord from this time forth and forever.
Beloved, it may be time to humble yourself and wean your soul from the things that disturb you.
