Mary Magdalene was a worship because she had been smitten by grace. She followed the Lord beyond the grave. The follow scriptures trace just some of Mary Magdaleneâs story. Hopefully they will connect the dots and help you understand why Mary made Jesus her chief priority, wanted to be at His feet, poured out her costly perfume on Him and trusted in His words in ways that not many other have had the faith to do. Â
Jesus Heals Mary Magdalene of seven demons.
Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities:Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herodâs household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means. Luke 8:1-3
Mary Magdalene was the one Markâs gospel describes as the woman who came with the costly oil.
And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. There were some who said to themselves indignantly, âWhy was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.â And they scolded her.  But Jesus said, âLeave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.â Mark 14:3-9
Mary Magdalene, smitten by grace and love, chose to worship at Jesusâ feet instead of serving with her sister Martha. Selah.Â
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lordâs feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, âLord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.â But the Lord answered her, âMartha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.â Luke 10:38-42
John tells us as he write his gospel that this same Mary Magdalene was the one who anointed the Lord.
Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. John 11:1-2
After Lazarus died, Mary still hoped in Jesus and she anchored her faith in Him. She waited patiently in faith for the Lord and when He came she cast her cares upon Him with the faith of a woman who knew He could do miracles. (Read John 11)
Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, âLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.â When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. John 11:32-33
Again, while Martha served, Mary worshiped the Lord, anointing Him with costly oil, and ended up at His feet once again. (This is the same instance Mark describes at Bethany where she prepares the Lord for burial. But Mark mentions that she poured the oil over His head.) We know that oil poured on the head runs to the feet:
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion!  For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. Psalm 133
Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. John 12:1-4
Mary Magdalene followed Jesus all the way to the cross.
But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his motherâs sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:24
Mary Magdalene followed Him beyond His death. She went to the place of Jesus’s burial and He appeared to her there. She was the first to see Him after His resurrection.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her,âWoman, why are you weeping?â She said to them, âThey have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.â  Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.  Jesus said to her, âWoman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?âSupposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, âSir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.â Jesus said to her, âMary.â She turned and said to him in Aramaic, âRabboni!â (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, âDo not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, âI am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.ââ  18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, âI have seen the Lordââand that he had said these things to her. John 20:11-18
Beloved, do you remember when you were smitten by the Lordâs grace and love for you? Think on and your heart will long for such times of worship and closeness again.Â
