Before I give you the reasons why we shouldn’t judge others I want to describe the type of judgment I’m talking about.
The Bible defines the word judge as it relates to what we should not do to others as: to condemn, damn, make a determination or a conclusion about another, or sentence another to doom.
The Bible tells us that this type of judgment is reserved for God alone because He is the Lawgiver, (James 4:12). It makes sense that the One who gave the Law be the only One who is Judge, and He will judge everyone at His appointed time, for our words and works or lack thereof – what we did or did not do with the time He gave us on the earth.
The Exception:
Well, it’s not really an exception but people get it confused…
The Bible does say that the elders and the mature in Christ, those who have been tested are to judge peoples actions within the body of Christ to bring discipline when need to a brother or sister with the intention of restoring them Christ. (1Corinthians 5:12)
However, the Bible tells us that judgment of peoples fate is left to God, as well it should be.
Three Reasons Why We Should NOT Judge Others are:
- The Bible tells us plain and simple: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you,” Matthew 7:1, 2.
- We are supposed to examine ourselves – on our own failings and shortcomings, with the intentions of making adjustments so that are not judged by the Lord. The New Living Translation puts it this way, “But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God,” 1 Corinthians 11:31. We shouldn’t judge others because when we do it’s hard to focus on the only person God told us we are to judge, ourselves.
- The Bible tells us not to judge anything before its time, (1 Corinthian 4:12). Why? Because of the reasons listed above, we don’t have the power to sentence anyone’s eternal fate and therefore shouldn’t not make determinations or draw conclusions about anyone either. God can change anybody at anytime.
Beloved, if you have been judging others, being critical or thinking or speaking evil repent right now and ask God to forgive you so that you will not be judged with the same measurement in your time of distress.
