Isaac was the child of promise, yet God asked Abraham for this most precious thing.
The Bible says:
“God tested Abraham’s faith. ‘Abraham!”’God called. ‘Yes,’ he replied. ‘Here I am.’ ‘Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.’”
Genesis 22:1-2 NLT
Video Devotion – Offering Your Isaac
It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.” Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead. Hebrews 11:17-19
Abraham had to surrendered all.
The Lord wanted to make sure that Abraham would hold nothing back from Him before He pronounced His abundant blessings upon him.
For God to ask us for the things we love the most, the things He has promised us is not uncommon. It’s not because He wants to hurt us or take anything away from us, rather that He wants to know that we love Him more than anything or anyone. He wants to know that we have faith in Him just as Abraham did, to offer to Him as a sacrifice whatever He ask of us, being fully persuaded that He as able to restore it unto us, whether it be a dream, a relationship, a vision. Whatever it is,He wants to know that we trust to do what is best and to guide our lives.
It is only when we get to this point that He says,
By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Genesis 22:15-18
